Today two varieties of coffee are commercially grown: Cafea Arabica and Cafea Robusta. Arabica has been cultivated since 600AD. The growth in the use of Robusta coffee has taken place since 1940. The hardy Robusta variety was endangered by a disease called leaf rust and has twice the caffeine (and yield per acre) as Arabica, but a generally inferior taste.
